What is Rolfing®

Rolfing® is a scientifically validated method of body restructuring and movement education. Its goal is to release the body’s segments, (torso, legs, arms, etc.) from lifelong tension and bracing. The Rolf method allows gravity to re-align these body segments, thus making a better balanced body.

The work of Rolfing® focuses on the body’s connective tissue system. Fascia, a particular type of connective tissue, is what Rolfers™ are directly influencing in their sessions. Of all the forces affecting the human body, gravity is the most powerful. Poor body misalignment in gravity results in chronic strain, pain, lowered vitality and impaired biological function.

Poor posture is worse than it looks. Poor posture results from poor structure. When the body parts are lined up improperly, maintaining good posture is impossible, no matter how often you try to stand up straight. Bad posture leads to an inflexible spine, painful joints and muscles and a less attractive appearance. This results in less energy, more injuries and lowered self esteem.

Rolfing® changes the structure, in a gentle, safe and lasting way. The ten sessions of manipulation of the fascia, reorganize the structure, so that it becomes more vertical and symmetrical. Because the body is better balanced after Rolfing®, it expends less of its vital energies against gravity. This biological energy efficiency is often experienced as a higher level of alertness and vitality. Movement becomes more fluid and overall well being and function improves.

Does Rolfing® Last?

Yes. Photographs reveal the changes of the basic ten series are present years after the completion of the series. However, as bodies change, and accidents often occur, additional work may be useful. Often, Rolfing® clients have tune ups periodically, depending on their needs, and if they have had injuries. Tune ups quickly restore the body into the lines of gravity, making it easier to maintain balance and ease in the structure.
